Chapter IIThe Heritage
Original timber framing inside Puddled Duck Cottage

I. Original oak frame, c.1500

The Heritage

A Tudor home, thoughtfully awakened for the way we live now.

Built before Shakespeare drew breath, Puddled Duck Cottage has stood watch over the village of Tattenhall for more than five hundred years. Recently restored under the careful eye of English Heritage, the timber frame has been renewed and the original thatched roof reinstated.

Inside, considered upgrades — a new central heating system, a refitted kitchen, a copper-tapped bathroom, a private terrace off the master bedroom — meet original beams and limewashed walls.

The bones are five hundred years old. Everything that touches the skin — the linen, the copper, the warmth underfoot — is new.

Chapter VThe Location

The Location

A pretty Cheshire village, moments from everywhere worth going.

Tattenhall is the kind of village where the post office still sells the morning paper, and the pub still keeps a fire in the grate. From the cottage door, country walks unfold in every direction — and Chester, with its Roman walls, independent shops and Michelin-listed dining, sits ten minutes away.

Guest Reviews

Loved by every guest who stays.

We've stayed in plenty of cottages over the years, but Puddled Duck is in another league. The restoration is exceptional — and the bed may be the most comfortable we've ever slept in.

Like stepping into a story. The beams, the fireplace, the little terrace at sunset. We didn't want to leave, and our spaniel didn't either.

Effortlessly stylish, immaculately maintained, and the perfect base for exploring Chester. We've already booked our return.
